King Saud University has obtained an American patent for a three-leaflet mechanical heart valve design, invented by Professor of Cardiology at the College of Medicine, Dr. Rakan bin Ibrahim Nazer, according to a report by the Saudi Press Agency published in Al-Madinah newspaper on October 8, 2026.
The design relies on three moving leaflets connected to a mechanism in the center and an outer ring, to coordinate opening and closing and regulate blood flow and reduce backflow.
The innovation focuses on developing the movement shape and flow path in mechanical valves, compared to conventional designs, and adds to the university's work in medical innovation.
